Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes reckons the Red Devils don’t have the players to compete at the top of the table in the Premier League. United is currently in sixth place in the standings with nine wins in 16 matches and seven losses.
Erik Ten Hag’s team was once again stunned by Bournemouth by 3-0 on Saturday at Old Trafford, which was their seventh loss of the season. United had finished at the third place in the points table in the previous season but they haven’t been able to replicate the same performance in the ongoing term.
Furthermore, injury woes to key players like Casemiro, Mason Mount, Christian Eriksen, and Lisandro Martinez have added salt to injury.
“We definitely don’t have the players to compete at the top of the table. We’re nowhere near that level. Even if this group of players perform to their very best, they’re just not good enough. The culture of the club comes from the training ground and the manager needs to get that right. It just seems all over the place,” said Scholes while speaking to TNT Sports.
Scholes, who was a workhorse in the midfield during his heydays, said the club should back Erik Ten Hag but also admitted that the manager will be under pressure with new owners coming in.
“I think for the manager, unless he gets something sorted pretty quickly, he’s going to come under huge pressure. I just don’t think changing is the answer, but you have to worry about it – especially when new owners come in. New owners like to bring new people in. He’ll be under big pressure if things don’t improve,” Scholes added.
Manchester United will next face arch-rivals Liverpool in their next league match on December 17. Before that, they will take on Bayern Munich on Tuesday night in the UCL.
